What is vaginitis?

Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina, which can often be caused by infection. It can cause itching, a burning sensation, and pain during sex.

The three most common types of vaginitis are:

Yeast Infection: The vagina produces a certain amount of yeast naturally, but other physical conditions can cause an unhealthy excess of yeast cells to be produced. This can be caused by antibiotics, pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy to name a few causes. Yeast infections are more common in people with weakened immune systems.

Bacterial Vaginosis: Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria. Using an IUD, smoking, vaginal douching, or having an STI increases the chances of bacterial vaginosis.

Trichomoniasis: Trichomoniasis, also called Trich, is a vaginal infection caused by a parasite called trichomonas. It’s a very common sexually transmitted infection, and a majority of people with Trich have no symptoms.

What are the symptoms of vaginitis?

Vaginitis symptoms include:

  • Vaginal odor, often described as a “fishy” smell
  • Pain during sex
  • Pain during urination
  • Grey, yellow, or green discharge
  • Swollen, red, itchy genitals
What causes vaginitis?

Vaginitis is caused by an imbalance in the naturally occurring yeast or bacteria in the vagina. When this happens, it can be the result of:

  • Hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause, or hormone therapy
  • Having a sexually transmitted infection
  • Sexual activity
  • Taking antibiotics
  • Use of spermicide
  • Douching
How is vaginitis treated?

Vaginitis treatment varies depending on the cause of the vaginal inflammation. Some medication for vaginitis requires a prescription, and other types can be purchased over the counter.

If the vaginitis is caused by a yeast infection, a Maple doctor will likely instruct you to use a medicine available at a pharmacy, like Canesten or Vagisil. If you’ve never had a yeast infection before, it’s important to consult a doctor to be sure this is the cause of your discomfort.

Bacterial vaginosis treatment requires a prescription for antibiotics, like Flagyl (metronidazole). Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotics too, commonly Flagyl.

What is the difference between vaginitis and vaginosis?

Vaginosis is a vaginal infection. Vaginitis is the inflammation that happens as a result of the vaginal infection.
