Frequently Asked Questions

What is citalopram and how does it work?

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It helps restore the balance of serotonin in the brain. Citalopram is sold under the brand name Celexa.

What are the uses for citalopram?

Citalopram is used to treat depression, to improve mood, energy, and feelings of well-being that are affected by depression.

How do you use citalopram?

Citalopram is typically taken by mouth, either as a tablet or a liquid, once a day with or without food as directed by a doctor. If you’re using the liquid version of citalopram, make sure you always use the special measuring device to get the correct dose. Your doctor may have you start on a low dose and gradually increase it in order to avoid side effects.

What are the side effects and risks of citalopram?

Common side effects of citalopram include:

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Decreased appetite
  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Sexual dysfunction, prolonged erections
  • Sweating
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of concentration

In some cases, especially towards the beginning of treatment, depression and anxiety can get worse or you may develop suicidal thoughts. If any of this happens, speak with your doctor. Get medical help immediately if you experience any serious side effects such as fainting, fast/irregular heartbeat, black stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, seizures, or eye pain. Rarely, a symptom called serotonin syndrome/toxicity may develop and can cause fast heartbeat, hallucinations, severe dizziness, severe nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, twitching muscles, and unusual agitation.

Who should not take citalopram?

Do not take this medication if you are taking other SSRIs. Do not take citalopram if you’ve taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Citalopram can cause QT prolongation and should not be used if you have medical conditions or take drugs that cause QT prolongation, or if you have a history of heart problems.

If you have any questions about the medication, you can speak to a doctor on Maple by registering for an account.

Does citalopram expire?

Citalopram does expire. Always follow expiry dates listed on the prescription bottle or the pharmacy label to determine if the medication is still effective. If there is no expiry listed, the FDA considers citalopram expired one year from the date it is dispensed. This is the longest period of time that the manufacturer can guarantee its potency and effectiveness.
