A kidney infection is a severe urinary tract infection. It occurs when bacteria travels up the ureters and into your kidney. It can quickly become a medical emergency, so early treatment is essential.

Signs and symptoms of a kidney infection can include:

• Fever and chills
• Back, side, or groin pain
• Abdominal pain
• Frequent urination
• A strong, persistent urge to urinate
• Burning or pain while urinating
• Pus or blood in urine
• Urine that smells bad or is cloudy
• Nausea and vomiting

Kidney infections are primarily treated with antibiotics. However, if the infection gets severe, you may be hospitalized for a course of IV antibiotics. Chronic kidney infections may  indicate a structural problem in your urinary tract, and you may be referred to a specialist for surgery.
