Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Maple Alberta Health GP service if I have a family doctor?
Yes. However, the primary goal of the Alberta Health GP program is to improve access to healthcare for those who don’t have a family doctor, live in rural or underserved areas, or can’t travel. We always recommend contacting your family physician first. If you use Maple, we recommend sharing the records with your family physician after your visit.
How long will I have to wait to see a General Practitioner, covered by AHCIP?
Visits are all on-demand. You’ll be connected with a doctor in under 2 hours, provided you’ve entered your health card. Visits are conducted through Maple using audio or video on weekdays from 10am to 8pm MST. This service is brought to you by Maple Maskawâhtik.
What is Maple Maskawâhtik?
Maple Maskawâhtik is an Indigenous-owned company focused on delivering culturally appropriate virtual care through collaboration with diverse communities across Canada. For more information about Maple Maskawâhtik, click here.
Do I have to see the doctor over audio or video?
Yes. Currently, only audio or video visits are covered by Alberta Health. If you’d prefer to speak to a doctor over text, you can use the regular Maple services 24/7 by selecting “General Practitioner” instead of “General Practitioner (Covered)”.
Will I have to pay anything out of pocket to see a General Practitioner on Maple?
Our audio or video doctor visits are covered by Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. As long as you select “General Practitioner (Covered)”, and add your Alberta Health card to your account, no payment is required. You’ll be prompted to put in your health card number before your request is sent to the doctor.
If you need to see a doctor after hours, our national network of doctors is available 24/7 for a fee. You can also use Maple to see specialists such as dermatologists and psychotherapists for a fee. For more information about our specialties, click here.
What time are these visits available?
Alberta Health-covered visits are available on weekdays from 8am to 10pm MST.
What if I want to see a Maple doctor outside of these hours?
You still have access to Maple’s national network of general practitioners and specialists any time, day or night, at regular Maple pricing.
Can I get a sick note using this service?
If you require a sick note, you can use our regular Maple services 24/7 by selecting “General Practitioner” instead of “General Practitioner (Covered)”. Fees may apply. Notes are provided at the physician’s discretion.
How do you ensure continuity of care on Maple?
Maple generates a summary after each consultation. Patients and their consulting doctors can view these summaries at any time. To ensure continuity of care, patients are encouraged to fax their consultation summaries directly from their Maple account to their primary care provider, if they have one, or anyone in their broader care team. The summaries can also be consulted for any future Maple visits unless patients choose to keep their history private.
Maple is actively working towards integrating its platform with Alberta’s provincial electronic health record, Netcare. Once complete, this will enable information captured during Maple visits to be automatically uploaded to Netcare for more comprehensive record-keeping across the system.
